Oaths? Questions?
By Marjorie Welish and James Sienna. Granary Books, 2009. 32 pages, 11 x 7 inches, 50 copies. Ruth Lingen, in New York City, printed the images on Somerset paper. The typographic layout, by Marjorie Welish and James Sienna, was printed letterpress by Art Larson at Horton Tank Graphics in Hadley, Massachusetts. Oaths? Questions? was bound in printed cloth over boards. The binding structure was designed by Daniel E. Kelm and Kylin Lee at the Wide Awake Garage in Easthampton, Massachusetts, and produced by Kylin Lee at the Blue Eyed Cicada Studio, also in Easthampton. Steve Clay, Philip Gallo, and Judy Tobar provided assistance.

“Printing on Mylar—or, in this case, polyester—is more painstaking than difficult. One can figure out the correct tack for the ink, the right amount of drier to add, and how heavily to pack the press. What is difficult is how finicky the material itself is: polyester scratches easily, quickly builds up a static charge, attracts dust, and picks up oil from your skin. Careful handling solved most of the problems for the 1,000+ sheets/20 formes printed for this stunning book.” —AL
